The Defense Minister Mihai Fifor says that the Romanian Naval Forces will be equipped with three submarines, through an Army endowment project to be presented to the Supreme Defense Council and the Parliament. Fifor estimates that the program for the three submarines could begin in 2020. He made these statements on Friday, aboard the frigate 'King Ferdinand'.
He specified that this would be another major program to endow the Army, besides the one with the realization of the four multifunctional corvettes and the modernization of the King Ferdinand and Queen Maria frigates.
The Romanian Naval Forces currently have a single submarine, the Dolphin, of Soviet origin. The submarine, however, is no longer used for more than 20 years because the batteries are no longer functional and the Army has not found a solution to this problem.
The Defense Minister Mihai Fifor has said he wants 2018 to be the Year dedicated to the Navy for endowment programs.
In the past years, very important things have been done with the Romanian Air Force. In 2017, the F-16 plan was completed. Now there are 12 such aircraft in the Romanian Army.
He said the next week's government meeting will include the construction of four multifunctional corvettes, hoping that this contract will be signed by the end of the year.
"We are already prepared on the legislative side to start the program on the four multifunctional corvettes. On Wednesday, in the Government meeting, we present the draft Government Decision for the four multifunctional corvettes so that we can start a competitive dialogue so that this contract can be signed up at the end of the year and the construction of the four corvettes to enter in a straight line, "explained Mihai Fifor.
The Minister reminded that an essential condition of this program is that these corvettes are built in a Romanian shipyard.
