Alin Pohilcă, Liviu Gălățanu and Liviu Moise are 3 naval architects in their early 30’s, that emigrated immediately after graduation, in 2010, in UK and Norway, respectively, where the maritime, offshore and naval industry are well established. In 2016, they’ve set up GLO Marine, the first naval architecture company in Romania since 2013. In 2017, GLO Marine managed a turnover of 350,000 euros and for 2018 they expect a 115% growth in their revenue.
GLO Marine’s founders are naval architects with over 7 years of experience, previously working for globally recognized naval architecture consultancies such as: DNV GL, Subsea 7, Petrofac and Global Maritime. Their experience involved highly technical projects complemented by management responsibilities, experience that allowed them to implement a new business model in Romania, focused on their client needs. This new approach got them their first client, VARD Tulcea, one of the most prestigious shipyards in Romania. GLO Marine also collaborates with clients from Norway and Poland, providing stability and structural analysis services.
“We’ve been working closely together with GLO Marine over the last year and I can say with certainty that every contractual requirement and deadlines were met for each project. GLO Marine is a young company, but their dedication, hardworking attitude and a new modern approach makes them extremely efficient and flexible.
I fully trust that if they continue with the same approach, they will remain a long term reliable partner for VARD Tulcea”. Eugen Tanasescu, VP Technical Department, VARD SA
GLO Marine started their activity in the 4th quarter 2016, employing only 3 people. A steady growth in workload allowed them to gradually employ 20 highly trained naval architects across 3 departments: hull design, outfitting and piping design.
Initial investment was in the range of 40+k euros, during their first half of year activity. Their funds came from personal savings and loans. The funds were spent to buy specialized IT hardware and software and to cover all salary costs. This investment was recovered at the end of 2017, the company currently registering a healthy profit margin.
During 2017, 75% of the company business was contracts with Romanian companies and the rest of 25% was achieved via contracts with foreign companies (Poland and Norway). Part of their future business strategy includes expanding their business portfolio boosting the revenue share obtained from contracts outside Romania.
“Our business strategy, from early beginnings, was to develop a sustainable business, characterized by long-term stability that offers high-end naval architecture consultancy and design services, which are poorly covered now by the Romanian industry”, says Liviu Moise, CTO of GLO Marine. “We have and we are continuously investing in training our in-house personnel both in their technical development and client interaction skills, to establish our company as a provider of high quality services. Our healthy start, gives us confidence that in 2018 we will double our business revenue without compromising quality”
For 2018, GLO Marine is predicting a significant growth in their revenue, expecting a 750,000 euros turnover, due to an established internal infrastructure and continuous business development with their European counterparts. GLO Marine’s main offices are based in Galati, a major hub for naval architecture professionals, which hosts the only Faculty of Naval Architecture in Romania. The city has major ties with the industry being in the close proximity of the Galati, Braila, Tulcea and Constanta harbours. GLO Marine also has an office in UK, office set up in 2014, strategically placed to respond quickly to client needs from Europe.
“GLO Marine’s team is comprised by young professionals, full of energy, that are driven and have ideas. Their experience varies between 3 and 10 years, working previously for established naval architecture design companies and shipyards. Some of them had the courage to give up job offers from abroad to be part of our project and vision. Our success is their success, they provide a highly quality service and they interact extremely well with our clients”, says Liviu Gălățanu, Director of R&D , GLO Marine.
GLO Marine is a company that provides a comprehensive range of naval architecture services, consultancy and design. Consultancy services include stability calculations, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and structural analysis for maritime and offshore sector – newbuilds and ships in service.
Design services include concept, basic and detail design, covering the full range of naval architecture design. Our shipbuilding history as GLO MARINE dates to 2014, starting with ships in service projects for oil and gas industry and continuing with cruise vessels and fishing vessels – newbuilds for the maritime industry (8 cruise vessels, 1 expedition vessel and 1 arctic trawler). For the latter, we have provided mainly detail design services with the involvement of all our 3 departments: hull, outfitting and piping design.
